A Skinful of Shadows

A Skinful of Shadows is a captivating, creative and compelling novel, full of twists and turns. I connected immediately with the main character (Makepeace) and loved the variety of characters surrounding her. I also thought the setting of her world added a lot to the story, and the civil war tied the story together. All of the characters seemed very real and some of their hopes and dreams were extremely touching.
The opening chapter was very striking- it hooked me in and made me want to read on. ““A stick gives you a chance”. Her mother gave a slight, sad smile.”A small chance. But it would be dangerous to stop running””. This quotation, near the start of the book, is a recurring theme throughout the book. Time after time, Makepeace is forced to make a seemingly impossible choice, and her choices move the story further along, and give you a better understanding of her character, and the characters with her.
In this book, themes of ambition, hope, loyalty and secrets are explored and this gives it depth and power. Frances Hardinge has done an excellent job of making the world she describes seem real, and the characters with it. Overall, I think this is an amazing book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes stories of supernatural adventures and a flair of mystery.
