Alex, Woodroffe 2019

The Poet X

The book didn't stand out to me as far as an award winning books goes, it was a pretty predictable coming-of-age novel, nothing really made it interesting for me, the characters had some perks, but more or less followed the basic character models of these books, aggressive mother, distant father, a gay character who is trying to cope with his sexuality ; even though the main character seemed unique at first, even she still followed the same basic mould, and fitted into the predictable world just like every other character. I barely noticed any impact the poetry had on the story, it was neither a good thing nor a bad thing, just there. All in all the book did not seem to be especially interesting compared to the rest of the candidates.
