Charlotte, Woodroffe 2019
This book is BAD. I've been quite disappointed with the nominees so far, and I had very low expectations for this book, and I'm sorry to say that this book passed with flying colours. Poorly written, dull, and bland story-wise, this book made me so sad that children and young adults these days are expected to read simple, young books which have very basic writing and plots, instead of being encouraged to read challenging adult novels which require more time, thought and effort being put into reading them. I would recommend this book to preteen boys who like basketball, but I am a 14-year-old girl who devours adult books in less than a week, and this was just NOT my style. The characters were very stereotypical and not interesting in the slightest, and the choice to do the whole book in verse really was a poor decision, as it didn't add anything to the story, limited the descriptive language in the writing, and those comic strips! They just made me cringe. I think that this book might be more enjoyable if it was easier to relate to, so if I was younger, a boy, liked to read Marvel comics and liked basketball. If my dad taught me to play basketball and if my lifelong dream was to meet the Harlem Globetrotters. But I am none of those things, and even if I was I don't think that's any excuse for reading poor literature. AND IT'S A SERIES.
