The Hate U Give

‘What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent?’

Starr lives in two very different worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and the posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is suddenly shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of Khalil, her best friend. The worst thing? He was shot by a policeman for being black and having a hairbrush that looked like a gun. Now, everyone is looking at Starr. What she says could destroy Garden Heights. It could also get her killed.

The Hate U Give is stunning. I have never read a book that has touched my heart in so many different ways and this book has also given me an understanding of black America in such a truthful way that this book kept me crying. I feel so sorry for Starr and others in her position, you should never have to see two of your best friends get shot, especially by the police. Starr has been through a traumatic time and she must be very strong to keep on going. ‘Brave doesn’t mean that you’re not scared, but that you don’t run away.’ #BlackLivesMatter
