Megan, Woodroffe 2019

The Poet X

The Poet X was, in most ways, a fairly conventional Bildungsroman - yet delivered via the medium of verse. Cue misunderstood teen grappling with her body, family and abilities, and cue reconciliation and optimistic ending. However, aside from the plot, the dual language and cultural references were fitting and the verse original. I found the mother's treatment of Xiomara unsettling and the elements of spiritual abuse never really resolved: the denouement seemed too neat and sudden. Nevertheless, I was fully invested in the characters of Xiomara and Ms Galiano and rooted for the protagonist to finally know and own herself.
